A STORY ON page three of yesterday's STAR spoke about a young man's fight for his life after he was stabbed and severely beaten by another student while at school on Monday.
According to the story, the student was stabbed during a fight between himself and the other student because of some writings on a wall.
It would appear that our youth are developing a culture of fighting out their problems instead of talking them out. Disputes, no matter how trivial seem to be solved by teens with their fists instead of their wits.
While it is fine to quarrel sometimes and let off a little steam, it seems our youth have found this alternative inadequate and have turned to more violent means.
How many times do we need to read stories or listen to news reports about youth fighting youth; youth killing youth; youth having lost all regard for life and its value.
The youth is where it all starts. They are the group of people we must reach if we are going to steer Jamaica off the dead end track to destruction on which it is now headed.
Good parenting, problem solving skills, respect for oneself and others are some simple skills that all youth need to learn if they are to begin to recognise their value and the importance of preserving their lives and the lives of others.
