THE LEAD STORY in yesterday's STAR spoke to the fear among students at the Mico College for their safety because of several robberies and attacks on them.
Students said in the story that armed gunmen have been using a damaged wall behind the school as an access point to and from the campus.
The vice-principal said he could do nothing about the damaged security wall as a culvert needed to be repaired by the Kingston and St. Andrew Corporation before the wall starts.
Apart from highlighting the urgent need for security on the campus, the story also highlights how the tardiness of one agency can significantly affect another, sometimes with life threatening implications.
How can a culvert damaged by heavy rains last year is still not repaired to date? It is frightening that students lives are being put in jeopardy simply because a culvert requires repair.
To make matters worse, there is no indication of when this will be done, and this has placed students lives in danger.
While the students wait for something to be done some part-time measure must be implemented to ensure the students' safety. Students need to concentrate on the business of learning and part of the necessary factors to ensure this, is feeling safe and comfortable.
The school administration and the government have a duty to ensure that this environment is created and as such should do their job and provide a safe place for students to learn.
