Brian Lara - FILE
WHY, WHY, WHY, why is it that Brian Lara has been made captain of the West Indies cricket team again? For a third time.
Is it about the record setting?
The little man from Trinidad has left an unforgettable mark, not just on the world of cricket but, on the world of West Indies cricket.
SELFISH ACCUSATIONS
He has been accused of all things good and bad. Some people have come this short of calling him selfish, as his record-setting feats seem to be far removed from the results expected from the team. That is, when he sets records, the team doesn't really win.
He has been accused of not being a team man and being a poor motivator - since the team record under his stewardship as captain twice before has not been at all impressive.
And often P and I have wondered how much if any of these things are true. Certainly anyone who remembers the glory days of West Indies cricket could never have dreamt that the fortunes of a once so mighty team would have fallen so far below sea level.
And certainly anyone who played with the mighty mighty fearsome, Windies A team which was designed to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat, could never have wanted to have been part of anything else but a successful regional squad.
PAINFUL EXPERIENCE
It must be a painful experience for Brian Charles Lara, one of two players [the other being Shivnarine Chanderpaul] who experienced the West Indies in their glory days, to be living with the abysmal performance of the team now.
And as such, P and I would like to think that Lara would not be happy to be leading a team of losers - since record or no record, this team makes him a loser too.
PSYCH BOOST
We can only think that making Lara the captain of the West Indies team is a major psychological ploy to ensure the success of the team. Let's face it, Lara is a proud chap; it must hurt his testicles to be a record holder in a record-losing team. He must want to change this and let's hope that he will be luckier the third time around. We hope.
