Comedians Ity (left) and Fancy Cat. - CONTRIBUTED
ONCE UPON A time Ity and Fancy Cat were deejays. It's no fairy tale, nor is it a punch line. The two actually had their eyes set on spitting rhymes for a while; however, when their comedy career soared, that became their main focus.
"I always wanted to be a deejay but I never really got into it because, after a while, the comedy thing took off and we started benefiting from that. Right now we are doing so many things in terms of comedy," said Fancy Cat.
Fancy Cat nonetheless did a few songs, including Freaks Come Out At Night, which he released with Action K last year. "She sang the chorus part about 'the freaks come out at night' and I did the deejay part," he said.
Ity also says deejaying was a passion of his since he was a child. "You know when yuh deh a school and used to beat desk and dem thing deh ...?" he said.
He says when he and Fancy Cat teamed up one day, they decided to go to the then JBC to an audition. They performed one of their pieces: 'Woman yuh pass, yuh get ticky ticky. Woman yuh pass yuh get ticky ticky'. But some people did start laugh and dem ting deh."
Still, they persisted. They started opening for Blakka, a fellow comedian, and in no time it started to pay off. "The first show we ever did was with Blakka, who is my brother, and it was called Comedy Klub. When we perform, we used to do like two songs and one joke and then the comedy thing started to take off."
Recently, the two even earned an appearance in the Jamaican film Glory to Gloriana. "I think we are going all the way to the top. Every year it gets bigger and bigger on our side," said Fancy Cat of their future plans.
However, the two have not totally forsaken their first love because, according to Ity, the two intend to release a single Laugh and Drop later this month. "We are going to perform it at the comedy concert at the LOJ auditorium in New Kingston at the end of the month. We are going to record it this month and perform it for the first time there," he said.
Ity says the song speaks of all the things they have seen while performing as comedians.
"Sometime you see people laugh so much and lift up dem chair and run up and down and them thing deh ... Now if I say I want to deejay, nobody will laugh anymore because everybody is a deejay now. Bogle opened up the thing and then you have people like Ding Dong, Fire Links, Richie Feelings ... everybody doing music," Fancy Cat added.
Do you possess the gift to make people laugh?
Well this month's artiste feature will be different in more ways than one. Not only are Ity and Fancy Cat not your regular dancehall deejays but also, their talent search will focus on persons who are capable of making people laugh.
Therefore, if you know you have the gift of making people laugh, call THE STAR toll-free line at 1-888-THE STAR and register. Winners will have the chance of performing at Backyaad Crack-Up and at the Asylum.
