A 50-year success

Kenneth and Joyce Thompson - CONTRIBUTED

KENNETH AND JOYCE Thomp-son come from a district whose very name connotes the reality of their marriage. They are from Succeed District in Manchester and the couple has managed to have a successful marriage for the past 50 years.

The couple first met while Mrs. Thompson was living with her brother, who lived in Christiana, Manchester. One day she saw Mr. Thompson and was immediately drawn to him. He was attracted to her as well. "She attractive, when I talking to her, she have nice ways. I ask her to marry me and she said yes. But, wi never marry right away, it tek a likkle time before we married," Mr. Thompson said.

After a year of living with her brother, he left and they both got together. The two lived together for about a year when Mrs. Thompson got pregnant. This was the turning point for the couple who decided to commit them-selves totally to each other.

On February 22, 1956, the couple had a simple marriage ceremony at the Christiana Anglican Church.

Mrs. Thompson said her family approved of the marriage and were happy for the two. "Well, at the time, it was only my mother, three brothers and stepfather and they were all happy," she said.

Mrs. Thompson said they have managed to overcome their challenges by communicating with each other. "We work together, we understand each other. We don't trace each other. If we get into any argument I walk him out," Mrs. Thompson said.

Mr. Thompson, a man of few words, believes the few arguments helped to hold their relationship together. "Firstly, wi move very good, never had any quarrel and we live very good," he said.

The couple has six children who were cared for by Mrs. Thompson who was a housewife. She said her husband is quiet and understands her moods.

Mrs. Thompson advises other persons considering marriage to be willing and try to make it work and they shall see the results. "Try and follow our footsteps. You mustn't quarrel with your wife, just live good," he said.
