Baby Power

MY FRIEND P and I are constantly amazed at what happens to adults when they are around babies.

As a mother of a darling seven-month-old, going through this baby-tag-along-experience for the second (and last) time, its certainly a fascinating thing to watch the natural human reaction to the presence of the young of our species. And for the record parents think that their child is the cutest, brightest, healthiest baby the world has ever seen - comparable to none - even when the critter is ugly as sin! Ignore that though and take it as gospel - Special F and I have created yet another darling young one - my friend P seh suh!

Anyway most normal adults become mushy when exposed to young babies particularly when the babies are well behaved. If these adults were 'cruffs' they lose their 'cruff' behaviour and warm to the exposure of one of God's greatest gifts to mankind. If they are stiff, they lose their stiffness and try to behave flexible like regularly people. If they are miserable, they get happy. If they think they are intelligent, they lose that thought and start behaving like total idiots. If they think they are not too smart, they try to behave as if they are Albert Einstein.

STUPID ANTICS

Certainly, the most pathetic of all is to see some formerly bright individual drift into baby babble as they engage in a pretend conversation with a babe or toddler. What is wrong with you people! Then the baby smiles and the adult thinks the child is approving of their stupid antics, when the kid is really laughing and saying "look at that clown". C'mon people talk to the babies like people because that is what they are.

Just imagine though that all of these changes take place with adults so that they can impress the young babe, we don't know since that really makes no sense, but we are very sure about how the silly adults can get when exposed to a babe in arms.

Of course women behave different from men. And I hear it's all related to these inborn maternal instincts. I have to say here because I have no recollection of a driving urge to be around a baby before I had one of my own.

In the most recent months since the young'un has got into the cooing and smiling lark Jane Public has become very interested. The most common comment is about the desire to steal my child because of how he looks. I was quite misted to happen upon this lady whom I was meeting for the first time who gave that I -am-exposed-to-a-baby-giggle just before saying, "Lawd im look tiefish eeh." This immediately followed by her killer question : "Can I hold him."

Well you know what didn't happen next. How in God's name was I going to hand my child over to some stranger who had declared that she had intent and motive to steal him? Was I suppose to hand her the opportunity and then call KingFish? P said I should lighten up a bit because the woman was not going to steal the boy. I guess he is right and if babies do provide a feel good fix for people, who knows we might want to expose more people to them - like your boss when you are asking for a raise.
