Praises for Portia

Members of the People's National Party watch as Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller plants the final of four small palm trees in Falmouth's Water Square as a part of the country's National Labour Day Project on Tuesday. - CLAUDINE HOUSEN

THE EDITOR, Madam:

Kindly permit me space in your column to express heartiest congratulations to Mrs. Portia Simpson Miller for coming out on top in the recent PNP presidential elections. I wish to say to you Mrs. Simpson Miller that you are indeed a shining star in the darkest night, and of course you were my candidate of choice from the very start of the race, and I am extremely elated with the result of the competition. It was quite fitting and pleasing that it was the Master's special day, the seventh day out of all the days, besides you were installed as Jamaica's seventh Prime Minister, how lovely!

With the help of the creator you can do great things, at a time when Jamaica needs a miracle to get us back on track. I am calling on all Jamaicans to join me in praying that God will give you the guidance to lead and lead effectively. I am also saying to the negative forces around us every day that instead of sitting in a corner and criticising, and questioning Mrs. Simpson Miller's credibility, please desist from doing so now! Because there should be no question if she can manage. I am quite sure she can.

To all the men out there who are gender biased I will quote a line out of one of our popular Jamaican artiste 'Shaggy' song, "don't you underestimate the strength of a woman". You can also look at all the single mothers who have to shoulder all the responsibilities in the absence of a man. I know I am a fair Jamaican man and I speak as I see things. So let me implore you to do the same.

There is another issue to be dealt with - saying that Mrs. Simpson Miller does not have a Ph.D. So what? If one does not have a Ph.D., one cannot manage? That is nonsense. I have no doubt for a minute that one can manage, anyone such as Mrs. Simpson Miller who has years of experience, is able to take on any task. To back up my claim we will all notice that there is a great demand for people with experience by employers and so on. It is also believed that experience is the best teacher. Our new Prime Minister Mrs. Simpson Miller has what it takes to function. I therefore charge you Mrs. Simpson Miller go with God and do your thing! Myself and other faithful Jamaican are praying for your strength to manage the task ahead.

I am, etc.,
