Man shot dead by off-duty cop

BY RASBERT TURNER, Star Writer

SPANISH TOWN

ONE OF TWO men who allegedly attempted to rob an off-duty policeman was shot and killed and a homemade gun seized. The dead man is Durran Barham, 20, labourer of Crescent District, St. Catherine.

The STAR learnt that at about 9 p.m. on Monday, the policeman was standing near a shopping centre in the Angels area when he was accosted by Barham and another man who attempted to take the policeman's gold chain, money and cellphone.

During a struggle, the policeman managed to draw his service revolver firing shots and Barham was hit. He ran and when the area was searched, he was found still clutching the homemade gun containing a 12-gauge cartridge.

His accomplice ran from the area and is being sought by the police.
