AUGUST TOWN HOLD a two-point lead in the Wray and Nephew National Premier League play-offs after a hard fought 1-0 victory over St. Georges at the University of the West Indies playing field yesterday.

The win, courtesy of a Tremaine Stewart goal in the 68th minute of play, gave August Town six points, keeping them two ahead of Negril and Naggo Head. St. Georges round out the four-team group with two points.

Naggo Head beat Negril 2-0 at Frome, joining their rivals in second after their victory at Frome.

The St. Catherine team was notching its first win of the campaign after Patrick Edmonson opened the scoring in the 20th minute and Nicholas Williams made it 2-0 in the 30th.

Over at UWI, a clearance which fell for Nicholas Smith drove a stake into the visitors' hearts.

Smith picked up the ball on the left side of the field and faked his marker to dribble inside of him and straight at goal.

He then slotted a through ball to Stewart rather than shoot for himself. Stewart finished the move well, running in from the right hand side of the penalty box, where his side-footed drive to the far post was unstoppable.

August Town coach Everton Bender said the game was a tough one and his team will have to keep working hard to keep their lead.

"Every game is difficult," he said. "We are used to playing every Saturday rather than Wednesday then Sunday, so we aren't recovering well yet but we'll have to keep working hard and win our home games and draw the away ones.

"That should be good enough," said Bender.

Losing coach, Donovan Duckie was perturbed by his team's failure to find a win in the play-offs.

"This is definitely not good," he said.

"We came to take three points and stop August Town from running to six points. We gave up a soft goal last week and we've done it again today."
