Lisa Hanna's child custody battle adjourned

BY BARBARA GAYLE, Staff Reporter

THE CUSTODY BATTLE between Miss World 1993 Lisa Hanna and her businessman former husband Dr. David Panton over their five-year-old child did not continue this week in the Court of Appeal. The hearing was adjourned because one of the three judges hearing the appeal is on sick leave.

Mrs. Justice Zaila McCalla fell ill in her chambers on Monday morning and had to be rushed to hospital.

The judge's illness left several judges complaining that their job was very stressful and more judges were needed in the Court of Appeal which now has a staff of only seven judges.

JUDGES' COMPLAINTS

The judges complained also that judges in the Supreme Court and Court of Appeal were still taking copious notes because there was no system in place for them to get the notes of proceedings at the end of each sitting.

Dates will be set by the Registrar of the Court of Appeal, Sherna Reid-Crosse, for the hearing to continue this month.

Ms. Hanna and Dr. Panton have been attending the hearing since the appeal began last month. Ms. Hanna who wants the child to live with her in Jamaica is appealing against a Supreme Court ruling that the child should be sent back to Georgia, U.S.A. to live with his father. The child was born in Jamaica and the parents have joint custody.

There is an agreement which was signed in a court in Georgia that Dr. Panton who now lives in Georgia, is the primary physical custodian.
