THE STAR continues its feature on selectors and DJs this week with the duo Razz and Biggy. If you would like to see a selector featured here email 'selector' to entertainment@gleanerjm.com.

THEY ARE YOUNG, full of energy and have the teenagers flocking to parties just to experience their musical mastery.

Sean Cousley and Richard McGrath, more popularly known as Razz and Biggy, have found a place in the musical fraternity, more specifically, as musical selectors.

The two, who were friends while attending Kingston College, found a love for music when they made a hobby of collecting records when they were in high school. This hobby later developed into their careers as DJ's.

"Wi use to do sweet sixteen parties, St. Hughs féte, key club association and di sound was called Uptempo dem time deh, but a likkle difficulty did develop wid di name, somebody else had the name so wi link up wid a sound called Guardian Disco and we did that for bout a year or two then we parted company," Biggy recalled.

THE PARTNERSHIP

It was in December 2000 that the two had their first outing as Razz and Biggy at a Utech fete.

"Me did always name Biggy from high school and Razz is a name weh him did like an people use to call him dat and from wi seh Razz an Biggy, it jus gi di ting a energy, it did just sound good," Biggy explained.

He added that the chemistry has always flowed, describing his partnership with Razz as "a natural energy and vibes, cause wi a do dis from 96' an' most time wi not even haffi talk, certain tings just set already, when we inna our zone nuh sound inna di world caan guh roun wi, a jus some wonderful tings a gwaan dem time deh."

At that time, Razz and Biggy developed a distinct flavor and energy, they were able to get any crowd fired up and energized. Under the direction of their manager, Tarik Zawdie Kiddoe (CEO, Swell Arts & Entertainment) the two were determined to make it.

In 2000, Biggy, while attending The University of the West Indies and Razz while attending The University of Technology, played frequently at both institutions. With access to a broader network, more equipment and other resources, they got significantly more exposure.

"The thing with Razz and Biggy is that is a sound weh can play uptown, downtown all around and our audience is normally college students, but generally, 18-30 years," Razz said.

Patrons may be accustomed to the two doing mostly selecting, with Razz doing most of the talking and Biggy mixing the tunes. However, the two have recently expanded their horizons into new territories.

They currently have a new mixed CD out entitled Ground Zero - one that Razz describes as, "a straight dancehall, half dub plates and half 45's (regular music). It features artistes like Assassin, Busy Signal, Mavado, Alaine, Bounty Killa, Aidonia, Kartel, Beenie Man yuh done know, everybody ... right now it hot a New York."

Adding, "this is like our third CD, but our last CD was like three years ago, but this recent one was released in March," Razz said.

The two have also established their own studio. Razz says, "wi a venture inna new waters now. Wi have wi private studio now located in the Half-Way Tree area and our first juggling riddim is called 'Moving Up' and so far, the likes of Assassin, Busy and a few others have voiced already. This should be completed by mid-summer."

The duo has also recorded a single with singer Danielle called Dutty Gyal, which should also be released shortly.

"So we embarking on these new projects with the help of Daseca, because we have been like brothers over the years," Razz said.

Among some of the upcoming shows that Razz and Biggy will be featured on are, Bounty Killer's 'It's a Party' , 'Cooyah XL' (both June 10), a show in St... Elizabeth with Fire Links (June 9), Orientation (June 23), and they will also be featured on the Bmobile Sunsplash Road Shows and the Portmore Awards (June 25).
