MANDEVILLE ALL-AGE and Junior High, for the second straight year, emerged the toast of the Manchester Primary School's netball championship which ended last Friday at Brooks Park.
Coached by Sonia Johnson, the school defeated rivals McIntosh Memorial 25-21 in a fairly competitive final, to end an entire season of domination of all the schools they encountered. Anchored by their outstanding player and captain Latoya Fearon, the champions led 5-3, 12-10, 18-16 in the quarters leading up to final score.
The final result could have been easily predicted, given their run since winning the opening rally on April 28.
Their stroll in the competition began in the preliminary round where they easily topped Zone A with convincing wins in most of their six matches. Kendal were completely overran in the first game as the defending champions won 62-0, before topping Comfort Hall 31-13, Villa Road 60-9, McIntosh 27-14, Bethabara 41-7 and New Forrest 26-22.
The strength of preliminary Zone A was underscored in the semis when Mandeville All-Age topped Hatfield Primary and Junior High 34-17 and McIntosh turned back Christiana Lease 20-8.
WHOPPING 358 GOALS
A key feature of Mandeville All-Age and Junior High's dominance was the role of Goal Attack Latoya Fearon, who finished with a whopping season-high tally of 358 goals. Quite fittingly, her performance was recognised in the awards ceremony which followed the final.
Also featured in the sectional awards were Harry Watch as the Most Disciplined Team, Shauna Murray as the best Centre Court and Christina McCreary as the Best Defender. Her role was greatly revered in her team's third place triumph in perhaps the most exciting match of the season, an extra time 13-12 win over Hatfield.
Representatives of sponsors Manchester Co-op Credit Union, who gave out a number of cash incentives, pledged their organisation's commitment to the league.
The facilitators of the league, the Institute of Sports (INSPORTS), through the local parish league director Barry Watson and the management pair of executive director Ian Andrews and Bruce McFarlane, his assistant, were also present at the finals and presentation ceremony.
