P and I were talking with some young ladies the other day about the pros and cons of dating an older man.
As it is true with everything else the sense of age is all relative. So some of these ladies were clear to define that while they would date an older man they would not date an old man.
And what is old?
Well for some old was anything over 40. For others old was 50 and up. I explained that when I was 'out there', old was anyone who was capable of having pure experiential conversation with my father.
You know like discussing the first Nat King Cole concert that they both attended in England. Or the emotions they felt when the Jamaican flag was raised and the Union Jack lowered to show the country's independence. Now that was not on. Yes, you would want your date to get on with your dad but not that well. A generation gap is a prerequisite of the relationship!
IMMATURE YOUNG MEN
But as usual these discussions with the youngsters were quite enlightening. They said going out with men their age, that is, mid 20s, was out of the question. Men their age they claim are immature with little to offer and most of the time are not thinking straight. Younger men they insisted, were boring at best and boorish at worst.
Young men, you have problems. I am not sure what you guys are doing wrong - but I hope that the sample of women P and I were talking to were not representative.
I thought that their generalisation was quite extreme though - but they insisted that the older dudes were more stable.
While I suggested that older men might be just a little bit more possessive, more inclined to believe that they own their spouse they said maybe, but were not fully convinced of this being an insurmountable problem. The heart of the issue I think is that older men have more money - I didn't say it but I think that is where the real age lies.
On the flip side a pastor suggested to me that there is a growing habit of older women going out with younger men and it is all about the ride. Older women often have flashy cars and their young consorts get opportunites to ride in these cars. And of course the older women get their rides too! So everyone is happy all the time.
Well, since this was being told to me by a pastor I knew that I was not being lied to. So don't worry young men, apparently hope springs eternal from older women.
I think there is merit in going out with men your own age. You can share similiar experiences. Get bored with things at the same time and not worry about growing apart and staying together as a punishment.
