A 37-year-old man who used a knife to stab his girlfriend on the grounds of the Spanish Town court office, where she went to get a restraining order against him, pleaded guilty and was recently sentenced to three years hard labour.
The accused, Everton Wellington of Lakes Pen, St. Catherine, appeared in the Spanish Town Resident Magistrate's Court on a charge of wounding with intent.
Investigating officer, Constable Sheldon Elliot of the Spanish Town Police Station told the court that on May 12 at about 9:45 a.m., the complainant went to the court office and completed the application for a restraining order against Wellington.
She was walking outside when Wellington attacked her from behind and stabbed her several times in the upper body before leaving the scene. He was chased by police personnel from the nearby courthouse but he managed to elude them.
The young lady was taken to the Spanish Town Hospital and admitted for five days. A search was launched for Wellington and on June 11 he was picked up in Kingston and taken to the Spanish Town Police Station where he was charged.
Before the sentence was handed down, Wellington told the court that he was guilty but it was the complainant who fell on the knife. The R.M. did not take his word. He was subsequently sentenced.
