Holmwood hold the advantage

BY CARL SPENCE, Star Writer

GLOOMY SKIES AND a wet pitch resulted in only 15 overs being bowled in yesterday's second day of the Spaulding Cup Final between Corporate Area champions, Eltham High, and rural kingpins, Holmwood Technical, at Melbourne Oval.

When play was finally allowed at 4:00 p.m., Holmwood, resuming on their over night total of 192 for 8 in reply to Eltham's meagre first innings total of 108, batted eight of the allotted 15 overs and could only manage 18 runs to carry their tally to 210 all out.

Andre McCarthy, 55, and Andre Creary, 52, made the bulk of the runs for Holmwood against the bowling of Frederick Hermitt, who took 4-71.

Set a deficit of 102 runs, Eltham lost the wicket of opener Matthew Stewart (1) to end the day's play on 15 for 1. Stewart who scored 21 runs in his team's first innings fell to the spin bowling of National Under-19 representative, Ziggy Levy.

The game goes into its final day today with Holmwood holding first innings advantage and should the match end in a draw, Holmwood would be crowned all-island champions for the fourth straight year.
