A LANDLORD WHO rented a house in the Kingston 20 area has been receiving numerous complaints from neighbours about the conduct of his tenant.
He said the new tenant came into possession of the premises in February this year and so far has been paying her rent without any problem.
"Prior to this new tenant, I rented the premises to a tenant for three years and was not able to collect the rent," the landlord said. He said when the tenant left she owed him almost $20,000.
"The real problem the neighbours tell me is that this new tenant is using the house as a brothel," he disclosed. A neighbour who has my telephone number calls me almost daily to make complaints that the tenant and her girlfriends use the premises as a brothel.
"I have no proof of this and when I asked the tenant she said the accusations were not true," the landlord said.
If the neighbours are sure that the house is being used as a brothel, then you or the neighbours can make a report at the police station in the area.
The Offences Against The Person Act gives the police the power to obtain search warrants to search such premises.
Section 68 of the act states in part that "if it is made to appear to a justice by information on oath that there is reason to suspect that any premises or part thereof is used as brothel or for the purposes of habitual prostitution, the justice may issue a warrant authorising any constable to enter and search the premises at any time of the day or night".
The act gives the police the power to seize articles which can assist in proving the case and to "arrest any person found therein who there is reasonable cause to suspect is committing or has committed, any offence against this act".
