Holmwood nab fourth Spaulding Cup title

BY CARL SPENCE, STAR Writer

HOLMWOOD TECHNICAL RECORDED their fourth consecutive hold on the Spaulding Cup title yesterday with a convincing 10-wicket win over Eltham High at Melbourne Oval, St. Andrew.

Eltham, who were defeated for the second straight year by Holmwood, resumed the final day's play on 15 for one, needing to score 113 to take the lead. They had previously scored 108 in their first innings while Homwood made 210.

However, the spin pair of Ziggy Levy (6 for 40) and Oshane Jones (2 for 5) restricted the St. Catherine-based school to just 128.

An unbeaten 27 by number nine batsman, Kino-Paul Sailsman, was the only resistance to the vigilant bowling and fielding performance by Holmwood.

ALL-ISLAND SUPREMACY

Set a meagre target of just 27 runs to claim all-island supremacy, Holmwood reached their target in just 4.5 overs. The openers, Jeffrey Scott (19) and Marlon Johnson (5), ensured the trophy took an early trip back to their school with the match concluding at 2:30 p.m., three and a half hours shy of its scheduled end.

"This is our fourth consecutive victory at this level and to have won the Spaulding Cup on four consecutive occasions must be a really good feeling, and I'm very proud of the achievement," said Holmwood's coach Robert Lewis.

Lewis attributed his team's continued success to discipline and good sponsorship.

"It is the level of discipline and dedication that the boys are putting in as well as the support we receive from the school, community and places like SuperPlus Food Stores which have been instrumental in assisting with our program." he added.

A flustered Eltham coach, Oral Simpson, blamed poor shot selection as for his team's demise.

"I think we batted poorly over the three days of the competition and that let us down. We lost three of our senior players from the last team and with the team age averaging 17 years, inexperience played its part," he said.
