Toll tantrums in 'Sunshine City'

TEMPERS FLARED AT the Lions Civic Centre on Tuesday. Residents and the Portmore Citizen Advisory Council met to iron out plans as to the acceptable toll those in the 'Sunshine City' would be willing to pay when the Causeway leg of Highway 2000 comes into effect July 13.

The residents told PCAC Chairman, Yvonne McCormack, that they do not intend to pay more than $30, some arguing that a $5 toll would be suitable. They also stipulated that they wanted the toll, which is reviewed every six months, to be reviewed over a yearly period and that senior citizens and pensioners must not pay the toll. They said there should also be frequent-user benefits.

The residents also pointed out that before any consideration can be given to a toll, the areas of Passagefort Drive, Port Henderson Road, the Mandela Highway and other roads in the municipality, must be satisfactorily repaired.

During the meeting a few persons made the mistake of proposing a $50 toll and the majority of the residents would have none of it. They were booed and heckled and called all types of dirty names.

The residents also claimed they have been disrespected by Minister Pickersgill, who has abandoned them and that if the conditions proposed are not met, the toll road will be boycotted and the Government would have to find other ways to pay the developers.

"I think that a toll of $40 is reasonable, if all the conditions are being met. However until this is guaranteed, we cannot take any chances," said Delroy Dobney, a resident.
