COUNCILLORS IN PORTMORE are not pleased with the type of water that is running through the pipes in the Greater Portmore area and as such have taken the National Water Commission to task.
According to Councillor Leon Thomas of the Hellshire division, some five years ago, several residents demonstrated against dirt-like objects in their pipe water. He said the utility company had promised to rectify the problem. He said that they have not done so as the dirty water is still coming through the taps.
Thomas, who was in a no-nonsense mood at a recent Portmore Municipal Council meeting, showed council members a quart bottle with water that he claimed was collected from a tap. When he shook the bottle, silt-like residue transformed the clear liquid into a dark brown colour. He was clinical. He added that schools in Greater Portmore, with more than 8,000 students have to be drinking the water and that this was not good for their health.
Mr. Thomas said that the last time he spoke with the NWC he was told that the company would have to invest millions of dollars to install a filter in the main system that takes water from the Goshen well. He said that the company is short-sighted as they do not care about the people but the money that they will have to spend.
He added that what infuriates him is that each time he tries to get in touch with the utility company, he is avoided. He therefore asked the council to do whatever is in its power to get the Water Commission to consider to the plight of the people. All the other councillors attending the meeting endorsed the point made by Mr. Thomas.
