National basketball team off to Centro tournament

KENTUCKY FRIED CHICKEN (KFC) came to the aid of the national women's basketball team yesterday when they provided 60 per cent of the money needed for the team to compete at the Centro Basket Championships in Mexico City.

The corporate giants, who were also major sponsors of the Caribbean Basketball Championships and the National Basketball League, announced that they would contribute $480,000 of the $720,000 needed or the equivalent of 10 of the 16 airline tickets required for the trip.

QUALIFYING TOURNAMENT

The team, which is scheduled to leave the island today, hopes to qualify from the Centro Basket tournament for the FIBA Americas tournament next year and from there to the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, China. The Centro Basket tournament will run from June 25-29.

The women's team was crowned Caribbean champions for the first time in its history exactly one week ago at the National Indoor Sports Centre.

Jamaica completed the double when the men's team beat the U.S. Virgin Islands to cop their third Caribbean title. Their Centro Basket tournament will run from July 4-8 in Panama.
