System Restore - Windows life saver

BY LEROY MCLEAN, Contributor

VOL 12:5

I AM NOT the kind of person to praise companies too much for their products. However, I must say whenever I am in trouble and get help then that's a whole different story.

It's about 11:30 p.m. and I am connected to the internet at home. I was browsing and searching for some important applications to help me in my video production. I went over to a particular website and saw a video clip which I wanted to watch.

VIRAL DOWNLOAD

The website told me that I didn't have the right software to view this video, and I should download it from there. I clicked on the link and started the download process, and within a minute it was all over.

After the download I noticed that the video was still not playing, and I was not getting several pop-ups on my computer. It got even worse, messages were being sent telling me that I now had a virus!

Wow! I was thinking this just can't be happening to me at this time of the night, I am not prepared for it. I just could not believe it. I was totally speechless about the situation and needed help fast.

Personally I was taken for a ride by this website and they installed spywares and Trojan horses on my computer. Even though I had Windows Defender and AVG Antivirus installed, neither were able to detect my troubles.

I went into a direct panic mode over my distress situation. I knew that I needed help and fast. About fifteen minutes of worrying went past and still no solution, I calmed myself down and started thinking.

Yes, I figured it out. Since I was using Windows XP, then there was great hope for me. Windows XP comes standard with a new feature called System restore.

System Restore is a component of Windows XP Professional that you can use to restore your computer to a previous state, if a problem occurs, without losing your personal data files (such as Microsoft Word documents, browsing history, drawings, favorites, or e-mail).

RESTORE POINTS

System Restore monitors changes to the system and some application files, and it automatically creates easily identified restore points. These restore points allow you to revert the system to a previous time.

Finally I was able to restore my system and get back to that safe place in my life. I was now a happy man and indeed learned a valid lesson.
