JAMAICA STARTED ON a winning note at the Centrobasket Tournament for Women, dominating both their matches.
The five-day competition (June25-29) in Mexico City, opened with four matches on Sunday including Jamaica playing Costa Rica, which ended 71-67 in favour of the Caribbean Basketball Champions.
Captain Oberon Pitterson was the high scorer for the Jamaican team, contributing 17 points while Simone Edwards scored 13. Natalia Iglesias Gonzalez led Costa Rica, scoring 31 points for her team and Zulay Aguilar Villalobos added 18 points.
In other matches on Sunday Cuba whipped Barbados 102-50, Mexico demolished El Salvador 88-29 and in a close match Puerto Rico defeated U.S. Virgin Islands 74-70.
In yesterday's game, Jamaica maintained their winning streak after defeating U.S. Virgin Islands 62-45. At the end of the first quarter U.S. Virgin Islands led 21-14, but could not maintain their lead slipping to 8-21 in the last quarter.
Pitterson sank 17 points while Shaquana Wilkins contributed 19 points for the U.S. Virgin Islands.
