ASAFA POWELL'S WORLD leading 19.90 seconds run at the National Track & Field Championships on Sunday has inspired the sprinter to run more half lap events this season, according to his manager Paul Doyle.
Doyle said Powell's impressive sub-20 run, a stadium record, has put him in line for more 200m races this season. "We didn't have any 200m in the plan, but I am sure you will see him run more," Doyle said.
Doyle said with such a performance, a lot more requests will be coming for the sprinter to run the 200m.
"I am sure there are going to be a lot more meet directors that will want to see him run against Wallace Spearmon," Doyle said of his athlete, who joined American Spearmon as the world leaders this season.
Last week in an interview, Powell said he was forced to run the 200m by his coach Stephen Francis. But after Sunday's performance, he said he was glad he did.
"I can be the best in both events," stated Powell, who shares the 100m world record with American Justin Gatlin.
He also said: "I can run anything I want to, I can even go to the 400," he said with a smile.
Powell and several of his MVP teammates will leave Jamaica tomorrow for their European-base in Italy.
Sherone Simpson, the world leader in the 100m (10.82) and 200m (22.00), along with World Championships silver medallist Michael Frater and Brigitte Foster-Hylton, the World Championships 100m hurdles bronze medallist, are also expected to make the trip.
