Mavado on the corner in his Cassava Piece community. - IAN ALLEN
THE STAR'S ARTISTE of the Month Mavado proclaims himself to be a real 'gangsta for life'. One of the reasons behind this is his lack of fear.
He states, "As a yute growing up, mi no really scared of nothing. Mi neva understand death like how me understand it now, to fraid of it. Mi nuh really scared of nothing. Now mi no really fear death, death is for every man. The only thing mi might fear is Jah. But it no mek sense to fear death".
He continues, "Gangsta for life is not an image, its a lifestyle, its the way mi grow up. Mi no really fear no man, a just the way it go still. To how mi grow and how my father raise mi, mi no grow fi fraid. A man is jus a man, every man have life and every man can have life taken away. You and dem life is the same thing, dem can dead like how you can dead, so why fear dem?"
The artiste credits his views of life to the way he was brought up, the kind of neighbourhood he grew up in. He says, "Where mi live, you can't tek a gun and run a man. Out dere is the real ting, so me turn dat into a lifestyle." It would seem that Mavado stays true to his word, singing about reality around him. The Real McKoy is a true Gangsta for Life.
