A CROWN WITNESS in a murder case was ordered into protective custody after reporting to the St. Elizabeth Circuit Court on Monday about threats on his life.
The Crown witness reported that at times he received telephone calls and persons knocked at his window telling him that he would be killed if he did not remove himself from the case.
Presiding judge Justice Lennox Campbell, after hearing the evidence, rescinded the bail of the two accused persons, Valerie Chambers and her brother Eccelston of Burnt Savannah District in St. Elizabeth.
The Chambers are charged with the murder of their neighbour William 'Eric' Dunkley, 68, pensioner, who was chopped several times in his head and all over his body on the night of October 18, 2004.
The judge said the voice of the court must be heard and steps be taken to protect and keep the cases in court, as there are people out there who were trying the cases outside of court.
He ordered that the highest level of safety be given to the witness. The case is set for mention on July 4.
But this is not the first time that a witness reported being threatened in this case.
In December last year, during the preliminary enquiry, another Crown witness reported to the Resident Magistrate that she had been threatened. She was told by the court to make a report to the police.
