KFC Jumpball Basketball clinic in full swing

THREE HUNDRED BOYS and girls are expected to pack the National Stadium basketball courts today for the KFC Jumpball Basketball Clinic.

This four-day basketball clinic for boys and girls 12-16 years old is just one in a series of seven free clinics spread across the island this summer, all projects of the Notre Dame Jumpball Basketball Programme.

The basketball clinics are led by an international coaching staff of professional and collegiate coaches in the United States as well as local Jamaican coaching talent. Jumpball coaching veteran Rick Turner, previously the head coach of the American Basketball Association's Bellevue Blackhawks, will return once again to lead the instruction, assisted by Kyle Plank of Hope College (Michigan), Jill Bodensteiner of St. Mary's College (Indiana), Harold Wright (Washington State) and numerous experienced coaches from in and around Kingston.

The seven basketball clinics planned for this summer are the most ambitious undertaking of the Notre Dame Jumpball Basketball Programme and will serve approximately 540 children in total. The highlight of the programme is the clinic held in Kingston, which will attract nearly 300 children this year. This will be followed by a series of two-day rural clinics, each serving approximately 50 boys and girls. Following the kickoff in Kingston, the first two-day sessions will be held in Portmore (21-22 July), Treasure Beach (28-29 July), Oracabessa (4-5 August), Mandeville (11-12) August, Montego Bay (18-19) August and finally Port Antonio (25-26) August.

PERFECT ATTENDANCE

At each of these clinics children not only learn about basketball and some important life lessons, but receive a free lunch courtesy of KFC. Children with perfect attendance also receive a T-shirt and many prizes are awarded each day.

The clinics are open to children between the ages of 12-16 and run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. today through Thursday at the National Stadium basketball courts. Participation is free to all but admission is limited to 300. Participants should show up no later than 8:30 a.m.
