THE SAFETY OF the tap water for drinking has been a concern for some customers of the National Water Commission (NWC).
Some persons, in an attempt to drink pure water have been purchasing bottled water, boiling or using filters to guarantee that their piped water is safe to consume.
But despite the concern by customers, Charles Buchanan, public relations manager at the NWC, says the water provided by the NWC is extensively tested and meets world standards.
He said that the quality of the piped water is suitable for consumption. "Studies have shown that bottled water provide no better water than tap," he told THE STAR.
TAKE SAMPLES
Buchanan also said in cases where persons have concern about the quality of the water they are drinking, they can contact the commission. He said the agency has trained personnel who can take samples of the water for testing to determine if something is in fact wrong.
He says if they find themselves at fault, then the agency will determine how to deal with the problem. However, he warns persons to check their water supply chain as the problems may lie there. He said at times there are problems with water tanks which are sometimes connected to the water main. These are sometimes contaminated and the reason for the poor water quality.
He says in some households, the main is connected to the drum and sometimes the water that comes through the pipe is actually from the drum. This water could have been contaminated by several means and might not have been a cause of the NWC.
