ON WEDNESDAY, THE Gleaner published a story about the intention of the Government to draft child pornography legislation.
While a move of this nature is welcomed, such a legislation should have been drafted and passed into law a long time ago. In fact, this should have been passed about the same time the Child Care and Protection Act was being passed.
Although the cliché "better late than never" can be applied in this case, in this day and age when technology is changing every minute, the laws of the country must at least attempt to reflect the change. At present, the section which deals with pornography carries a $40 fine but no mention is made of child pornography which is a reality we must deal with.
While the drafting of such legislation is still in the thought process, we hope that it will become law very soon. The need to enact this legislation speedily is especially important in light of recent events where a 13-year-old child was reportedly abused by a man and two teenage boys.
It could be argued that passing a law is one thing but enforce-ment is another thing. But, we can only hope that whenever the law is passed the police and members of the public will do their part in ensuring that our children are protected from harm. Let us remember that it is only through enforcement that a law can become effective.
