( L - R ) Shanika Shakes and Shauna-Kaye Legister
Before the death of Shanika Shakes and Shauna-Kaye Legister nothing happened in Town Head, Westmoreland. In fact, the community was almost unknown, but that all changed on June 30 last year, when the bodies of both girls were found raped and murdered in a cane field near their home.
Shakes, 8, and Legister, 9, were found dead almost a day after they left to deliver a graduation dress to one of the girls' sister. Since then, Town Head has searched for answers.
"Before this, we use to have quarrels and the odd wounding matter, but nothing like this," said Windell Dawson, chairman of the Shanika Shakes and Shauna-Kaye Legister Foundation. "From I was a child until now, we have had only two fatal motor vehicle accidents, but that's about it. Nothing else have happened since this situation."
Residents say the community has changed since the murders last year, in that they know the killer is among them, but they do not know who it is. They add that the community was so touched by the deaths that almost everyone turned up to support the memorial that was held three weeks ago.
Town Head residents say although they have been affected by the murders, what they want more than anything else is closure on the matter.
The police, in the meantime, say they are trying their best to bring closure, but need witnesses as the forensic evidence so far has failed to connect anyone to the crime.
