Although no one has been arrested in the murders of the nine children, police say several suspects have been held in the past and they are continuing their investigations into the murders.
So far, THE STAR has highlighted the murders of nine children that have remained unsolved to this day. The children are Jovaughn Williams who was murdered in June 2004; Shanika Anderson who was found dead in May 2005 and Toni-Ann Thomas who was killed in June 2005. The other deaths include Nicholas Baker who was shot by gunmen in July 2005; Sheneca Shakes and Shauna-Kay Legister who were raped and murdered that same month. Maurice Maxwell, who was killed in October 2005; Sasha-Kaye Brown who was murdered along with her family in that same month and Oksana Douglas who died in December complete the list of the nine unsolved murders.
To date, the police have held at least three suspects in the murder of Shanika Anderson. The girl was found raped and murdered in an open lot in May 2005. The police said the suspects were released because the DNA evidence failed to match.
In the case of Sheneca Shakes and Shauna-Kay Legister, several suspects have been held but they have all been released. In fact, one of the girls' mother put the number at more than 10.
"We're still trying to find the killer. Several suspects were held and released because the forensic evidence was not enough. We need information on anything that might help us," said Detective Corporal Everton Goldbourne, of the Savanna-la-Mar police.
The case of Sasha-Kaye Brown also has a similar story. The Denham Town police said they have made attempts to catch suspects in the past but to date they have been unsuccessful.
"It's the only murder in the division where we are yet to make a breakthrough. We went after one of the suspects recently but we failed to hold on to him. We are working feverishly to solve it," said Superintendent Delroy Hewitt of the Denham Town Police Station.
