Anthony Cruz - staying power

BY Krista Henry, Staff Reporter

Singer Anthony Cruz - File

The Star's Artiste of the Month Anthony Cruz is no fresh act in the business, having been around for 12 years. He has proven the power of endurance, watching people come and go but he's still making hits.

Cruz gives the low-down on staying hip. According to him, getting the right producer and label is essential, as "getting the right producer means getting the right push and promotions. It also means someone who allows me to create my own image and style. The majority of what has happened to me, I was behind it. I got to know all the disc jockeys, 'cause to me that works, they are the ones playing the music."

Cruz has seen the business change, as he describes it "there are crazy things happening now. Getting stuff out there, people have to know you for you to get your voice out dere." It's even harder for a more established act to stay current. Cruz elaborates: "older guys have been through their fair share to get out there. It's a little harder for us, so many artiste out there, 'cause everyone wants to be an artiste."

To stay in the business, Anthony Cruz states "do a lot of recordings, you have to search for that hit song. I do a lot of praying too." Cruz stays fresh everytime, having performed at Reggae Sunsplash and St. Mary Mi Come From. He says "it was wicked. Mi tear down the place. I got an excellent response."
