Try as we may it has been difficult for THE STAR to find someone to say something good about Nicholas Baker. Residents of Fitzgerald Avenue where he lived described him as a troublemaker. His school, Melrose Primary and Junior High, said the youngster was a truant and for the few times he attended school, was always in trouble.
The police too said Baker, who was 13, was no angel and based on the events that led up to his death, it would seem they were right.
On July 5 last year, Baker shot and killed 14-year-old Shauna-Kaye Brown at her home on Fitzgerald Avenue. The girl was at home when Baker went into her yard with a gun which he was was given to hide. The girl was reportedly leaving to call her mother when she was shot in the back of the head. She died on the spot. Baker reportedly ran from the scene but was held later by the same men who gave him the gun. He was taken to the Chinese Cemetery which is across the road from the community, where he was shot and killed.
The police have described Baker as a 'gun bag' meaning a youngster who transports guns, usually in their school bags. They said at the time he was a known 'gun bag' in the community.
"He was given the gun to hide when the incident took place. Instead of hiding the gun he took it to show off. That's why he was killed because he refused to follow instructions. In gangs, disobedience usually means death," said an investigator at the Hunts Bay Police Station.
