One of the vendors at Miss Lou's funeral. - norman grindley
Enterprising Jamaicans did not miss out on the opportunity to capitalise on the promising market that was at Miss Lou's funeral.
Vendors peddling wares ranging from ice cream to Jamaican flags, were out in their numbers, and those who anticipated the inevitable heat did good business with their bottled water and lemonade. Jerk chicken vendors dotted the streets near the National Heroes Circle, and those selling umbrellas seemed to materialise from thin air just as the first drop of rain fell.
One particular vendor near the Coke Methodist Church, where the thanksgiving service was held, walked around advertising shirts and merinos with Miss Lou's image. Though he refused to speak to THE STAR, he revealed that his prices were $300 and $200, respectively.
Kross, a flag vendor, told THE STAR that he usually sells at popular funerals. He said, "Mi try mek a ting offa every funeral. Wi haffi mek a living to how di time set." He added that he had sold "a good amount" of flags and said he had been walking around town since 8 a.m. Kross mentioned that he had sold memorabilia and water at the funerals of slain dancer Bogle and Arnett Gardens area leader William 'Willie Haggart' Moore.
