A deportee who was held at the Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay, St. James, for attempting to leave the island utilising a forged document was fined $250,000 when he appeared in court.
Andrew Williams, 25, of a Mandeville residence, pleaded guilty to uttering a forged document in the Montego Bay Resident Magistrate's Court on Tuesday. He will need to pay the fine to avoid a six-month prison sentence.
Williams, who is a baker, explained to Resident Magistrate Carolyn Tie that he was deported from Curaçao two years ago after he overstayed his welcome there. He said that he wanted to return to visit his young daughter who lives with her mother in that country.
He said he paid $25,000 to a man who said he could get the document for him but he said he had no idea that it was forged.
However, RM Tie told him that he should tell the truth, as his explanation made no sense. He was held on Saturday, August 5 after he checked in to board a flight to Curaçao. He presented a passport in the name Douglas George Watkins.
