Dear Pastor,

I sincerely admire the wonderful work that you have been doing over the years. I started reading your column from the moment I learnt how to read and I was thrilled to find out that you are a past student of my alma mater.

I have been struggling for years to figure out why is it that some Jamaican men believe that if a girl is not light skinned or do not have long hair they are simply unattractive. This is one of the most ridiculous, idiotic and illiterate things the people of Jamaica have ever conceived. I love my dark skinned girls. I think they are very attractive and I for one would never date a 'browning'.

Change emphasis

I am not saying that some of them are not attractive, but I think the emphasis should now be placed on dark skinned girls. I now realise that the emphasis is slowly being steered away from the 'browning' and it's about time.

I can remember in days gone by when you went to the banks, all you could see were brown skinned girls. No matter how dumb they were, they were considered superior to the dark skinned girls. I was getting so sick of this. I am not putting down brown skinned because I am of a light complexion and so is my entire family, but enough is enough. Congrats to girls who have dark complexion, you have now won your rightful place in society.

M. C., Kingston, Jamaica

Dear M. C.,

Everybody has his/her preference. Some light complexion guys love girls of dark complexion. Some do not. Some people would never marry or have an intimate relationship with dark complexion persons and some dark complexion persons will never have relationships with light complexion persons.

The problem is that some people are brainwashed by believing that everybody who is of light complexion is smart and attractive. Dark complexion people are beautiful, cool and educated too. Some light complexion people are illiterate and some dark complexion people are illiterate. No one should judge another by the colour of his/her skin.
