It seems that living in the Corporate Area and St. Catherine can be very dangerous for children.

Of the 36 youngsters between the ages of 0-15 who died between January 1, 2004 and December 31, 2005, only six were from other parishes. And, of the 30 deaths in the three parishes, the gun accounted for 14 of them.

The six children, Jovaughn Williams, Shadece Williams, Stacy-ann Gardener, Dwayne Davidson, Sheneca Shakes and Shauna-Kay Legister, were killed in 2004 and 2005. Jovaughn Williams was killed in Rose Heights, St. James in 2004. Four-year-old Shadece Williams; Stacy-ann Gardener, 13, and Dwayne Davidson 15, were killed by a man in Kilancholy, St. Mary in January last year. Later that year, nine-year-old Sheneca Shakes and Shauna-Kay Legister eight, were found dead in a cane field in Westmoreland.

While for the majority of the cases that took place in the Corporate Area and St. Catherine the gun was the weapon of choice, the criminals were not against using other cruel methods to attack our children. The fire accounted for four deaths while the knife and other objects caused several other deaths.

Among the cases in which the use of the gun featured were that of three-year-old Devonte Lawla, who was killed in January, 2004 and a 15-year-old who was shot and killed after gang violence broke out in an area of central Kingston called Southside.

But, 2005 saw the gun being most prominent as it featured in 14 of the 15 child deaths. Of the 15 deaths, three were in St. Catherine while the remaining 12 were in Kingston.

The other children in the 36 total were killed as a result of domestic disputes with family members or other persons.
