'Brown Man' fined for illegal DVDs

Noel 'Brown Man' Saunders, a man caught with a quantity of 'burned' DVDs in Half- Way Tree, St. Andrew, appeared in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court on Tuesday.

Saunders pleaded guilty to breaching the Copyright Act and told the court that he recently lost his job as a chef and was selling the DVDs so he could provide for his children. He also apologised for his actions.

Facts are that on August 12, between 5 and 5:45 pm, a raid was carried out along Constant Spring Road. The accused was seen near the Central Plaza with a number of pirated movies on DVD. He was arrested and charged with 10 counts of breaching the Copyright Act.

When he appeared in court however, RM Gayle admonished and discharged him on eight counts, fining him for only two. He was fined $20,000 or six months on the first charge and $30,000 or six months on the other. He was given three weeks to pay.

RM Gayle also explained to Saunders the importance of respecting people's property.
