PEOPLE's POLL - Buying your way out of a ticket

Several police officers have been accused of accepting bribes from motorists, and conversely, many motorists have been charged for offering bribes. We wanted to get an idea of how common this is, so we asked :

Do you drive a car?

Yes 21%

We then asked :

Have you ever given money to a police officer, or done a favour for a police officer, so that you would not get a traffic ticket that you probably deserved to get?

Yes 30%

And have you ever given money or done a favour for a police officer, so that you would not get a traffic ticket that you deserved to get?

Yes 23%

These results suggest that not that many people have bribed officers whether they deserved to get a ticket or not. These numbers may not really be reflective of the reality as this is something that is reported to occur quite regularly.

The poll was conducted on July 15 and 16 by Johnson Survey Research Limited

Sample size: 1,008 residents

Age of sample: 18 and older

Sampling error: +/- 3.1 %
