New education director in Old Harbour

By Elgin Taylor, STAR Writer

lluidas vale, st. catherine

There is a new director of the Ministry of Education and Youth Region 6 Office in Old Harbour, St. Catherine. He is Errol Levy.

His appointment became effective on August 14. He replaces Dr. Fitz-Albert Russell who has taken up position as acting chief education officer in charge of the Monitoring and Evaluation Unit at the Ministry's Heroes Circle head office.

Region 6, which comprises the parishes of Clarendon and St. Catherine, has a total of 224 schools ranging from primary to tertiary institutions. This is followed by Region 1 which comprises the parishes of Kingston and St. Andrew with 182 schools.

Prior to this latest appointment, Levy was the director of Region 1.

Region 6 is said to be one of the fastest growing in terms of population. As such, there was a challenge earlier this year to find additional high school places for GSAT students. According to the Minister of Education and Youth, Maxine Henry-Wilson, the shortage of classroom spaces was the main reason there was a delay in the publication of the results.
