Students at the Mount Salem Primary School in St. Ann, where Jovaughn Williams attended school had to receive counselling following the 11-year-old boy's death.

shot to the head

Jovaughn Williams, 11, and his mother, 34-year-old shop assistant Paulette Morris, were found lying on a dirt track in the area about 6:30 a.m. in June 2004. Morris had gunshot wounds to the upper body. Her son had a single gunshot wound to the back of the head.

The police say the two were killed about 10:15 p.m. the day before as residents reported hearing gunshots at that time. Then the police blamed the boy and his mother's death on a gang feud in the community.

Jovaughn's body was face down in the grassy area where he fell. There was a blue knapsack on his back. His mother's body, about 10 metres away, was sprawled on its back. A red travelling bag lay beside the body.

Guidance counsellor at the Mount Salem Primary and Junior High, Ethnie Harvey said students received counselling following the youngster's death.

"As it is within the guidance counselling unit, the trauma team was called in to deal with the death and offered coun-selling to students who needed it," said Harvey.

"Some of the students took it badly, so we had to talk to them about it and counsel them as well so that they did not feel so bad. Some of them were allowed to write something about him," she said.
