Two police officers who are charged with breaching the Corruption Prevention Act, are to be tried on November 9.
The officers, Constables Errol Bonner and Kumar Bailey, both from the motorised patrol division, were charged after they reportedly demanded two cellular phones from two men at the airport, in return for not prosecuting them. The officers are accused of accepting a Motorola V60 phone valued at $15,000 and a Motorola Razr, valued at $30,000 from two men who they say were breaking the one way near the round-a-bout at the airport.
It is alleged that after stopping the men, Constable Bonner threatened to arrest them, before asking them what they could do to help themselves. Bonner is accused of telling one man to hand over his phone to Bailey and threatened the other passenger into handing over his phone as well. The men then made arrangements with the officers to meet them elsewhere and hand over some money. The men reported the matter to the police and a sting operation was set up.
It is alleged that upon seeing the police officers, Constables Bonner and Bailey ran away. The officers gave chase and Bonner was held and arrested. Bailey on the other hand, reportedly jumped into the ocean and swam away. He was feared dead, until he handed himself over to the police, in the company of his lawyer.
When they appeared before RM Pusey, Bailey's lawyer told the court that her client had no part in the accusations, She admitted that he was there while the breaches were alleged to have taken place but added that "presence does not mean participation."
