The police in St Catherine have launched a recruitment drive to select more than 100 parish special constables (one day police) for the upcoming general election, which is constitutionally due by next year.
According to Superintendent Harry Daley, head of the St Catherine North Division, the aim of the exercise is to select a good cadre of persons spanning the age 18 to 60 for females and 18 to 65 for males.
The Supt. said that after the recruitment drive, there will be a selection process, persons will be given the lectures necessary about the laws governing election day exercise.
"We find it necessary that the one day police as they are called, is essential to the smooth operation of the election day exercise. The work of these parish specials will be a very rewarding one," Supt. Daley said.
During the day's exercise the parish special constables will be empowered to arrest persons who flout the law, and to this end the Supt. said that the candidates must be of sound character and have no previous criminal record.
