The Town Head community has been working hard in helping the police to solve the murders of Shauna-Kay Legister and Sheneca Shakes.
Shakes and Legister were found raped and murdered last year in a cane field a day after they went missing. The girls had gone to deliver a graduation dress to a relative when the incident took place. Their murders are still unsolved.
Surprisingly, Town Head, the community where the girls lived, has been cooperating with police by giving information whenever anything comes to the fore.
"It's an emotional situation because the area has never had anything like this," said Windell Dawson of the Sheneca Shakes and Shauna-Kay Legister Foundation.
DNA evidence
"I think the community wants closure because they want the killer caught," he said.
The police recently confirmed that the community was helpful so far in their investigations. In fact, more than 10 people have been tested to see if DNA evidence found on the scene of the crime has matched. Although the tests have been unsuccessful, the police said the number of persons tested is currently a record.
Still, both the police and community are confident that a breakthrough can be made.
Along with Shakes' and Legister's murders, THE STAR is also attempting to solve the murders of Jovaughn Williams, Sasha-Kaye Brown, Shanika Anderson, Nicholas Baker, Oksana Douglas, Toni-Ann Thomas and Maurice Maxwell.
Williams was shot and killed in June 2004 along with his mother in Rose Heights, St. James. Maurice Maxwell was killed as he sat on his verandah. Shanika Anderson was found raped and murdered on May 1 last year, a day after a man lured her away from the Coronation Market. Toni-Ann Thomas was murdered after gunmen sprayed her York Avenue community with bullets. Sasha-Kaye Brown was killed last year along with relatives when gunmen fired on her home and then set it on fire while Douglas was killed during a drive-by shooting in the Olympic Gardens area in December last year.
