Bail denied for rape accused

By Tashieka Mair, Star Writer

western bureau

A 27-year-old Lilliput, St. James man, accused of raping a teenager at knifepoint before stealing her cellular phone, will remain behind bars until November 29.

Courtney Trail, who recently retained legal representation from attorney-at-law Albert Morgan, was remanded when he appeared before RM Winsome Henry on Monday.

Late walk

In a bail application, Morgan said that his client admits to seeing the client very late on the night in question and offered to walk her home. The teen said that would not be necessary and that was as far as it went.

However, after hearing that there was violence involved in the alleged act, RM Henry decided against offering the accused man bail. He is answering charges of rape and robbery with aggra-vation. This was the fourth bail application made on his behalf.

Separate ways

It is alleged that about 12:30 a.m. on March 5, the 18-year-old complainant was on her way home when she saw the accused, whom she knew. They had a conversation and it is alleged that they later went in separate directions.

Further allegations are that as the complainant was walking in the direction of her house, a man, who said he was a gunman, held her from behind. The complainant alleged that she later recognised that her assailant was Trail, as she was near an area with lighting.

The accused asked her where she lived and about her parents before dragging her behind an unfinished building where he allegedly raped her. He then took her $20,000 cellphone and $2,700 in cash. He was pointed out in an identification parade on July 7.
