Four clubs advance to second round of Champions League

LONDON (AP)

Bayern Munich, Liverpool,PSV Eindhoven and Valencia became the first teams to advance to the second round of the Champions League yesterday. Chelsea and FC Barcelona will have to wait after a 2-2 draw in Group A.

Four-time champions, Bayern, advanced from Group B despite a 0-0 draw against visiting Sporting Lisbon.

Five-time winners Liverpool moved on from Group C, routing Bordeaux 3-0 on two goals from Luis Garcia and another from Steven Gerrard. In the same group, PSV reached the knockout stage with a 2-0 win over Galatasaray.

Valencia advanced from Group D after a 2-2 draw at Shakhtar Donetsk.

Chelsea earned a late draw at Barcelona on an injury-time goal from Didier Drogba. Chelsea have 10 points from four games and are nearly certain of advancing with two rounds remaining in the group stage.

Defending champions Barcelona have only five points in the group, two behind Werder Bremen, which beat Levski Sofia 3-0.

Bremen play at Barcelona on December 5 in a game that could determine which team advances.

"We must beat the other teams in our group now," Barcelona coach Frank Rijkaard said. "We have no choice, we have to do it."

Also yesterday Inter Milan defeated Spartak Moscow 1-0 in Group B, and Olympiakos drew 1-1 at AS Roma in Group D.

Despite reaching the next stage, Bayern were booed off the field by their 66,000 fans following the scoreless draw. A free kick by Sporting Lisbon's Joao Martins that ricocheted off the crossbar was the game's best chance in a dull match.

"Naturally they come to see goals, but today nothing worked," Bayern defender Daniel van Buyten said.

Liverpool dominate

Liverpool dominated after Bordeaux's Fernando Menegazzo was sent off in the 67th.

Garcia gave the English team the lead in the 23rd, and Steven Gerrard made it 2-0 in the 71st. Garcia scored his second goal two minutes later.

PSV advanced on goals by Timmy Simons and Arouna Kone, both coming after Galatasaray were reduced to 10 men late in the first half.

In Barcelona, Deco gave the defending champions a 1-0 lead after only three minutes on a low shot from just outside the area. Frank Lampard equalised in the 52nd with a curving shot from the goal line, but former Chelsea striker Eidur Gudjohnsen made it 2-1 in the 58th, setting the stage for Drogba's equaliser.

Chelsea and Barcelona are building a history.

Chelsea ousted the Catalans from the tournament two years ago, and Barcelona eliminated Chelsea last season en route to winning its second European Cup title. Chelsea beat Barcelona 1-0 two weeks ago in London.

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho, who said his club should have been awarded two penalites, criticised Barcelona for their alleged diving.

"I think it is not easy for a referee to be a referee when the players are minute after minute diving," Mourinho said.

"I think Frank Rijkaard is a lucky guy because Barcelona is Barcelona. The stars he has, and the way they are protected match after match, I think he is a lucky manager and I would like to be in his position."

Werder Bremen could give Barcelona a headache. The two drew 1-1 in their first game in Germany.

own-goal

Bremen went ahead on an own-goal by Levski Sofia goalkeeper Nikolai Mihailov in the 33rd. Frank Baumann made it 2-0 in the 35th and Torsten Frings added another two minutes later.

In Moscow, Inter Milan beat Spartak Moscow 1-0 on Julio Ricardo Cruz's first-minute goal. It was Cruz's third goal in two matches against Spartak. Inter beat Spartak 2-1 two weeks ago.

Inter have six points in Group B and hope to join Bayern Munich in the next stage.

In Kiev, Ukraine, Valencia rallied twice on goals from Fernando Morientes and Roberto Ayala to draw 2-2 with Shakhtar. Valencia have 10 points to lead Group D.

In the other Group D game, Roma got a 1-1 draw with Olympiakos on Francesco Totti's equaliser in the 67th. Julio Cesar scored in the 19th for Olympiakos.

Roma have seven points and are hoping to join Valencia.
