Althea Davis, organiser of the first Portmore Hair show, models a hairstyle called 'One-eye jack'.
Cosmetologist Althea Davis has a big heart, and recently she made the huge step of staging the first ever hair show in the Sunshine City at the Portmore HEART Academy.
According to the outspoken Davis, the show was a 'dream come true'. "It was really a dream come true to be the first person to put on a hair show in Portmore. the crowd could have been more but it was sufficient, I'm not disappointed," Davis told THE PORTMORE STAR.
Davis, a cosmetologist, though happy with crowd support, cried foul against her fellow hairdressers in Portmore who pulled out at the last minute. She was, however, thankful for the stylists who made good on their promise.
"The success of this show is largely dependent on the number of participants. initially I received a flood of positive responses from (prospective) participants. As time trickled down the contestants got cold feet and began to withdraw their entries," Davis explained. "I am extremely disappointed to see all my financial and physical efforts not fully realised, however, I will be promoting the show next year where I anticipate a more favourable response."
Despite the shortcomings, plans are already afoot for next year's staging. "Trust me, next year it is going to be bigger and better," Davis said confidently.
Male hairstylist Oneil 'dippozit' Richards from New Kingston had the winning entry.
Richards, a Cooreville Gardens, St. Andrew, resident, won with an entry named 'The Trophy' and modelled by Natassia Hall.
eye-catcher
It depicted a colourful and lanky weave hairstyle resembling a peacock that caught the eye of the judges, the audience and contestants alike. It was relatively easy for the judges to select the first-prize winner but a little more difficult for the second and third prizes.
Marie's Hair and Nail Salon in the Portmore Mall took the second prize with the hairstyle 'Kill yu mate pon spot', modelled by Rashada Andrade while third spot went to hairstylist Toussaint from Hair Vybes Salon in Bayside, the creation being the 'Upsweep' hairdo and modelled by Shanique.
Richards, whose salon Beauty Mart is located at 5 Dumfries Road, New Kingston, topped a femaledominated competition comprising of four hairstylists and 14 models.
Richards was excited about the win and commended Althea Davis for her bold step.
"I think that it is a bold step. people are happy about what she did and I have to give her props as for the first time something like this is done in Portmore. I appreciate it, give credit to Althea Davis," the champion hairstylist said.
