Dear Counsellor:
I'm pregnant and I recently found out that I'm infected with syphilis. I find it hard to believe because I have never had symptoms of any sexually transmitted infections. How could this be possible? What are the symptoms of syphilis in women and is my baby going to be all right?
Worried Mother
Dear Worried Mother:
It is possible for you to be infected with syphilis and the symptoms go unnoticed or it is mistaken for some other illness. Usually a painless sore or growth appears near or inside the vagina, the mouth or rectum. Often the sore or growth is not seen. These sores may appear to heal by themselves, but the disease is still in the body. If left untreated your baby may suffer eye damage, dental and bone deformities, blindness, brain damage or even death.
The infection may also lead to a miscarriage. Please follow your doctor's instructions carefully as untreated syphilis can lead to
serious and permanent damage.
