Charlie Smith High School is a haven for students in a violent community.
In fact Dennis Kelly, principal of the institution, said some people might find it bemusing considering they are located in the sometimes volatile community, Trench Town.
While they have incidents every now and then, they are isolated. These usually arise out of small groupings that are not necessarily gangs but a group of students who have some common bond. When one is threatened, violence might erupt.
However, he said being one of the schools involved in the Safe Schools Programme helps because they have an officer present on the compound.
This discourages students from carrying weapons as they know they can be searched.
Mr. Kelly said he at times uses scare tactics which work. "My promise of not taking anybody to hospital," he said if they get injured in any violent act, changes some students minds.
In addition, he said the guidance councillors, Peace and Love in Society (PALS) programme and the administration promoting no violence in their devotions all contribute to curtailing any negative behaviour.
He said they also encourage any visitors to come and speak with the students and the No Violence School Tour did just that on Thursday when artistes performed for the students all while reinforcing the No Violence theme.
"Being persons who are victims of the topic...they got it," he said.
