British nationals advised to change plea

WESTERN BUREAU:

Two British nationals answering to allegations of attempting to smuggle eight kilograms of ganja out of Jamaica, have been advised to change their guilty pleas, as they maintained they had no knowledge that the drug was in their possession.

Resident Magistrate Winsome Henry made the recommendation to Susan Shaw, 50, and her son Barry Lecointe, 28, in the Montego Bay RM Court on Tuesday.

Shaw said they were given what appeared to be packages of coffee that seemed to be professionally sealed and gave her no reason to be suspicious of the contents.

The two were remanded until today.

Allegations are the two went to Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay where they checked in on a My Travel flight to Gatwick Airport in London, England.

Their luggage was searched at the AJAS checking counter and Ms. Shaw's suitcase was allegedly found with three packages labelled coffee that turned out to be five pounds of ganja. Lecointe's bag was also found to contain 12 packages of 'coffee' that also turned out to be 14 pounds of ganja.
