Conspicuous drugs

Foregoing the usual careful packing when attempting to smuggle drugs, a British national simply packed a suitcase with 14 packages of marijuana and nothing else.

Chef Steven Ramsey, 39, pleaded guilty to possession, dealing in and taking steps to export marijuana in the Corporate Area Resident's Magistrate's Court last Wednesday.

Court records say on November 27, a policeman requested a search of Ramsey's suitcases. One of the two cases contained nothing unusual, but the second revealed packages wrapped in transparent plastic, carbon paper and masking tape. The packages weighed 53lb.

Ramsey was born in Portland, Jamaica, but left the country for England at age nine.

When RM Judith Pusey asked him to explain his actions he said, "I'm guilty, I did it."

He was sentenced to two years imprisonment and $15,000 for possession, $169,600 for dealing, and $424,000 for taking steps to export. If any of the fines is not paid, he will serve an additional year in prison.
